Lime mortar has incredible properties, whereby a seriously damaged stone wall which appears to be beyond economic repair can often be restored to it’s former strength and stability. Used as grout, a lime mortar can reach, and fill, the fullest recesses of a decayed stone wall, penetrating far beyond the limits of tamp pointing. Downtakings are reduced to the absolute minimum, as the wall is fully consolidated with much more of it’s historic integrity left untouched. The same process can ensure that fine ashlar joints, both new or existing, are fully packed with full strength lime mortar, reaching to a depth far beyond that of any pointing key.
